In this talk, I introduce Amazfish, an open-source smartwatch companion for Linux platforms, and explore what it takes to hack, reverse engineer, and develop applications for modern smartwatches. I compare several hacker-friendly devices, including PineTime, Bangle.js, AsteroidOS watches, Amazfit GTR3 Pro, and LilyGo T-Watch, explain how Amazfish supports multiple platforms from a single Qt/C++ codebase, and discuss the challenges of building for Sailfish OS, Ubuntu Touch, and Plasma Mobile. I also cover privacy concerns around fitness tracking and location sharing, and show how open-source software gives users greater control over their devices and data.
